Jamie Cullum gig

We went to see Jamie Cullum at an open air gig on Saturday night at Thetford Forest - it was a great show and a really good night! We took a picnic, some pimms and lemonade (and milk for Finnan!) and sat on our camping chairs enjoying the scene among the trees - the venue had a wonderful natural arena for the stage and the audience, kind of like a grove with trees arcing around one side. During the performance Jamie said how privileged he felt to be playing in such a beautiful setting. I guess compared to some of the venues he's played in his (short) time it was pretty mellow! And at Paul and my time in life it was pretty civilised - no sweaty mosh pits for us anymore!!

I'm a really big fan of Jamie Cullum since I saw a televised concert he did at one of the small Jazz festivals a few years back. I love his blend of pop and jazz, his voice is great and his piano playing brilliant. I also really love the rhythm stuff he does using the acoustics within his piano. If I ever learn to play an instrument - double bass would be so cool! - I want to play the music he plays, and if I ever get around to having singing lessons I want to sing like he does (only in a girl's voice, obviously!)

One of the suprises for me at the gig was the animation and graphics that were on the screen on the stage, some really imaginative line-drawn animation, some fun computer-type stuff (you can get it on your mobile here), and some stylish filming of him broadcast live - I'd kind of just expected filming of the him and the band. It really added a huge dimension to the music, especially in songs I was really familiar with.

Favourite performances were Get Your Way, 20 Something, Love Will Tear Us Apart/What A Difference A Day Makes, London Skies and All At Sea - just so much energy and discipline in the music and such effortless heart-wrenching / heart-warming vocals - I loved it! Particularly like the song Next Year Baby, which was a song I've never really noticed before but really liked.

All in all, 9.5/10 (if it hadn't rained for a few minutes it'd be a 10!!)

Great review Heather - I couldn't name a Jamie Callum song, but I know he is a renouned performer and to get such a hight score out of ten it must have been a really memorable show.

Would happily lend you a cd Mark - not sure he's exactly what you'd like but you have pretty ecclectic taste - apart from the Alarm obsession-thing ;)
